A bidirectional SFP (Bidi SFP) module is an optical transceiver that supports both Single-mode and Multimode fiber optic cables. It can transmit and receive data simultaneously in both directions, making it a versatile choice for networking applications. In this article, we will introduce you to the basics of Bidi SFP modules, including their advantages, types, and compatibility.

What is BIDI Transceiver?

In telecommunications, a bidi transceiver is a device that can both transmit and receive bidirectional transmissions simultaneously. The bidirectionality of the bidi transceiver allows it to be used in applications where full-duplex communications are required, such as in Ethernet networks. Bidi transceivers are also commonly used in fiber optic communications, where they are used to connect two optical fibers together. Bidi transceivers typically have two ports, one for transmitting and one for receiving. Some bidi transceivers also have a third port that can be used for monitoring purposes. Bidi transceivers are used in a variety of applications, including Ethernet networking, fiber optic networking, and video conferencing.

Working Principle of BiDi SFP Transceiver

WDM coupler is the key component in the bidi transceiver, it has multiple WDM filters to separate the wavelengths for transmitter and receiver. The WDM filter for the transmitter is on the left side of the WDM coupler and the WDM filter for the receiver is on the right side. There is a beam splitter in the middle of the WDM coupler, which will split some light to the receiver WDM filter. So when we look into the WDM coupler from port A (Transmitter), we can see port B(Receiver) is dark. Since there are only two WDM filters, one for Tx and one for Rx, we call it “Bidi Optics”, which means the fiber optic link can be used by two devices for communication in both directions. SFP+ Bidi supports a 10G data rate and reaches up to 100km via OS2 single fiber. Compared to SFP+ ZR transceiver with only one WDM filter, Bidi optics have a significant fiber cost advantage. Also, since Tx and Rx use different wavelengths, there is no crosstalk issue.

The Advantages of BIDI Transceiver

A key advantage of the BIDI transceiver is that it can support bidirectional communication over a single line of fiber, which means that it can be used in applications where space is limited. It doubles your bandwidth by using 1 Fiber for transmitting and receiving. BIDI transceiver modules are available in a variety of form factors, including SFP+, and QSFP+. BiDi optics are also available in CWDM and DWDM wavelengths.

40G QSFP+ bidirectional transceiver that can send and receive data over a single line of fiber. 40G QSFP+ BiDi optics modules offer an ideal solution for 40GEthernet and OTU3 applications, as well as for data center interconnections within 10km. The qsfp+ bidi transceiver uses WDM technology to transmit data over a single strand of fiber, allowing it to achieve long reach while also providing high bandwidth and low power consumption.
